It’s a similar concept to the carbon fiber plates found in other brand’s shoes, but Salomon uses various materials and plate shapes across different shoes. In addition to these new foams, Salomon developed the EnergyBlade plate it first appeared in the S/Lab Phantasm CF in 2022. It debuted on the S/Lab Pulsar in 2021 and also appears in the Ultra Glide. ![]() Energy Surge offers low weight, high energy return, and a softer feel than traditional EVA, and Salomon’s in-house testing shows it has superior vibration dampening compared to Optivibe. One of Salomon’s newest cushioning materials, Energy Surge, is made from a combination of EVA and Olefin-essentially a specialized version of Infuse. The first is tuned to absorb shocks and bounce back quickly, whereas the latter adds more durability on touchdown, making it well suited for long-distance running. Salomon also uses an EVA-based foam called Energ圜ell+ and Energy Save, a TPU insert, in its midsoles. JPAD (light blue heel puck) dampens the impact forces and vibrations that occur with each foot strike, while the springy Infuse layer (white midsole) propels you forward. ![]() Optivibe is composed of JPAD (a dense, memory foam-esque EVA material) placed at the heel, and Infuse (a lightweight, bouncy EVA-and-Olefin-based foam that Salomon developed with Dow Chemical) placed along the bottom of the sole. The first is a dual-layer midsole called Optivibe. The company has devised a few key technologies to achieve that without sacrificing comfort. ( Here’s a good place to start.) For the most part, Salomon shoes are firm, even when the company advertises them as cushioned, and they’re designed to give you a responsive ride with a good feel for the ground. If you like a super plush and pillowy soft shoe, we’ll save you some time-look elsewhere. With direction from RW editors, I combine all that info to choose what shoes make it onto this page. To write articles like this, I talk with brand reps about the company’s latest shoes and tech, consult RW tester feedback, and draw on my own experience with the running shoe industry. Running shoes is the category of gear I’ve written about the most, and I have firsthand experience with models from a range of brands. With its combination of robust construction, comfort, and fit, it was a forward-thinking design for the time that brought some of the best features of hiking boots to a running shoe. These are go-to shoes for everyday training or race day.Salomon’s running history began in 2001, when it released its Raid Race trail shoe. Further, the hydrophobic mesh kept water out of the shoe in wet weather and snow.Īfter over fifty miles on a wide range of terrain types, the Sense Pro 4 proved to be a comfortable and responsive shoe that performed well and withstood wear on everything from dry roads to slick and sloppy uphill slogs. I was pleased with how well the Profeel film upper protected my foot from rocks and debris. The Contagrip outsole performed as well as any Vibram material and maintained its integrity over many miles of abrasive terrain (ie., rocks and roads). ![]() This was my experience, but others seem to really like this lace system.Īfter getting accustomed to the narrower fit of this shoe, it felt snug and stabilizing and inspired confidence by keeping my foot in place. I had to carefully roll the excess laces and push them into the lace pocket or wad them up and stuff them in like a wad of gum. The Quicklace system allowed for quick and simple tightening however, tucking the laces into the lace pocket never felt very quick or neat to me. The fit was narrow and structured – almost stiff initially. Out of the box, I loved the colorway on this shoe but was concerned about getting the bright white outsole dirty on both the mud and dust that I encounter on a typical Colorado trail run. ![]()
